Process simulation in network-based learning environment

Different applications of computer-based training - simulators and learning environments - were studied from the viewpoint of process industry’s training requirements. Process simulation and its applications in training as well as network-based multimedia learning environments were the subjects of the literature study. In the experimental part two simulation models were developed and implemented for a network-based learning environment.

The aim of the literature study was to examine process simulation as an element of the learning environment. In the beginning, various modelling methods, simulation models and their applications were covered. Then different types of training simulators, their characteristics, targets for use and benefits were discussed. Finally various structures, characteristics and the use of network-based learning environments were discussed.

Although modern information technology has wide potential in organising personnel training - especially in process industries - its exploitation has been rather limited. Lack of expert knowledege, underdevelopment of tools, expensiveness of applications and negative attitudes towards new technologies to some degree hinder more extensive expansion of these technologies.

In the experimental section a programmatic structure and computational algorithm were developed to enable rapid development and implementation of new simulation models. The method developed was applied to the development of two simulation models suitable for training purposes in the paper industry. These simulation models - control of the calendering process and control of the thermomechanical pulping process - were later integrated into a network-based multimedia learning environment for the paper industry and process automation.
